Locked

will not start

I am try to get a Gateway Pent3 computer (Windows Me)to start. I even changed the power supply.I see a green light on the motherboard so it must be getting power so why won't it power up

The green light on the motherboard indicates that the 5 volt standby circuit on the power supply works.

Check the front panel power button.
Make sure it is correctly connected to the motherboard.

If you have an ohm-meter, check and verify that the switch contacts close when you press the button.

Since you already swapped the power supply, in order of ease of changing, here are the list of potential problem parts:

CPU:

Motherboard: Again, the power supply turn-on circuit could bebad.

Try removing ALL plug-in cards except the video card.

If this motherboard has a built-in modem, look around the modem area fro cracked scorched or burnt parts.
(Lightning strikes to the phone line have killed many a PC.)

Try re-setting the CMOS memory (clear BIOS)
And / or change the CMOS backup battery.
(A weak battery can cause indeterminate logic states, and cause strange problems.)

It may be a hardware problem like a blown crystal. Did u get to see a checksum error when the system last booted? Did the date/time of the system get altered?
