Win 2k PC Won't Boot

By jda ·
I have a pc on a small network the won't boot I get the following error:
"Windows 2000 could not
start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
It goes thru:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT\SYSTEM32\ntoskrnl.exe
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT\SYSTEM32\hal.dll
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT\SYSTEM32\BOOTVID.DLL
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT\SYSTEM32\config\system
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT\SYSTEM32\config\system.alt
and then goes back to the error message.

Then it asks for the disk or push "r" to repair - neither of which does anything. That's all that shows on screen.

Do you have virus scanning software on this computer? Either you erased wrong files or you have a virus that is destroying your OS. You can always try to copy the missing files from an existing W2000 computer to yours. I do have to agree with answer 1 though, the best thing to do is reinstall the OS.
