Win 95 Shtdwn, never get … Safe to Pwr
Lockedby lo · about 23 years, 1 month ago
I have a friend who’s husband likes to play with the pc (he is getting better but …). After getting it working again, the Safe to Power Off message never displays. The … saving data to disk … displays, but is still there after 10-15 minutes. They have just been shutting it of (and getting away with it so far). I think the did a reinstall of Win95 but didn’t help. Any sugestions?

a thing to try… in win98 when u have a virus scanner loaded up, there is a patch at http://www.microsoft.com that stops the computer from freezeing before power down.. check to see if there are any win95 updates?
also try msconfig….. click start button, runb, type msconfig, enter.
now go to startup tab, uncheck as many programs as possible… then try shutdown.. also does your pc have standby mode?? if so try disabling that as well.
good luck

McAfee virus scan could be the problem. I see alot of this, especially with IBM Aptiva’s. The easiest thing I’ve found to do is to remove the virus scan software from the startup menu. Hope this helps.

This is actually a common problem. There is a fix to this at microsofts web site. You can download it for free.

Unfortunatly, Windows 95″ does not use the “msconfig” command, this is included in Windows 98″. But the anti-virus hint is a place to start,if there is an option to check floppies on exit uncheck it. Also the video driver may have an effect on theshutdown hangup. Restart in safe mode, right click on My Computer, click on Properties, Device Manager, Open all +’S and check for duplicate enteries. Remove all dups. You can try a generic VGA Display to see if that’s the problem, if so obtain thenewest video drivers. Shut down and restart. Also try “windowsupdate.mircosoft.com” for the newest win95 updates.
Hope this helps.

Here is a reach, if you have a corrupted WAV file that you have playing when you exit windows, it will hang your machine up also.

You might want to also try this. Create a new shortcut on the desktop. In the “Command Line” box type the following:
c:\windows\rundll.exe user.exe,exitwindows
Make sure that there is a space between rundll.exe and user.exe, as well as NO SPACE between the comma and exitwindows.
Call the shortcut “Shutdown”. When you double-click on the shortcut it should shut your computer all the way down. If it does, then there is a device driver that is hanging during your normal shutdown sequence. You can try uninstalling device drivers until you narrow down which one is the problem. Otherwise, you can tell the person to shutdown the computer by double-clicking on the shutdown shortcut.

Win98 has a similar problem- I have seen many instances where the system will hang in the same way if you are using the Windows login for a network and you attempt to shut down without logging out first. I would check and make sure any accounts are logged out first.

WINDOWS 95 is having a hard time shutting programs down. TRY THIS and narrow it down with different things shutdown manually.
do a CTL/ALT/DELTE
then begin selecting things to shutdown until you can say when you shut down a hypithetical program called “menoshutdown” and you kill it through CTL/ALT/DELTE and then it powers all the way down. You then know that “menoshutdown” is haing issues.GOOD LUCK!

You have not mentioned if he gets scand disk after starting the system if he does not the file could be missing. Thr logo of windows and the shut down bitmaps are stored on the hard drive as logo.sys,logow.sys and logos.sys just run a search for forthe three files and see if they are present.
