Win 98 boot up/shutdown

By agyedu.md ·
System running Win 98 does not auto boot. Message "No PT. insert disk, press a key" displayed during boot up. Boot up continues succesfully when F1 is pressed. The system also does not shut down completely, displaying the "Wait, system shutting down" message forever. What is the possible cause for this?

Win 98 boot up/shutdown

by aplustoz In reply to Win 98 boot up/shutdown

The shutdown is a Windows 98 problem that Microsoft has documented. It stems from the way that Windows 98 shuts down all devices simultaneously, where Windows 95 closed them out one device at a time. Microsoft has a patch on their web page that you can download.

The boot problem sounds to me like a corrupted command.com file, but I'm certain that others will set me straight on that and give you a precise solution. Good luck!

Regarding your 98 machine not shutting down, don't bother with the update patch. Microsoft has issued two patches and neither of them works. By the way, the shutdown issue is limited to Win98 second edition.

If you want more info about your problem go to the Microsoft Technet and review Q238096. You can also go to the Microsoft.com support area and take a look at Q192, Q196, Q231, Q239.

I've spoken to a lot of other tech support people about this problem and none of us have found a solution that works. I hope you have better luck.

This is basically a system crash where as WIN98 is unable to access the boot partition and you are using the boot disk to boot the startup process, since you are already using the boot floppy ad cd to reinstall the system files from the cd by reinstalling the operating system,if you have access to backup do that first before proceeding.GOOD LUCK

For the boot problem, you might start out with booting to DOS using a clean boot disk, and running FDISK /mbr.
