win not shutting down

By smprficb ·
I have a system that I was told once had the "run" virus which I am not familiar with. supposedly whatever problems occurred were resolved. Now windows wont shut down properly it can only be done manually on the tower. also, I have been having mousetroubles. sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt. I have already tried 3 different mouses or mice or whatever.any ideas?

Apperently some of the files became corrupt and this is showing up,
Run the anti-virus once again
now run scan disk to verify any corrupt files,it may not report any.
find the mouse .exe files in C:/WINDOWS/Applications,delete then reinstall the files.
The other part will entail that you reinstall the service pack SRI from the Microsoft technical web site.
hope htis helps

Answer 1 is good, you could also try to re-install windows to another directory like win98(2). This will mean you have a fresh install of windows and will be able to identify if you have a software issue or not.

The big problem with virus scanners is when they remove the virus they can cuase alot of damage to the infected file. Some anti-virus programs will write dummy code over the top of the virus which is embedded in the file which stuffs it. The virus is gone but the problems persist, you will need to replace any damaged files.

Do you have the activity log for your antivirus program? This should tell you the files that were affected and you could replace them with sfc.exe or your .cab files. Do you get a error on bootup about your mouse? Have you removed the mouse driver and replaced it?

In re: the shutdown problem I would take the other advice and also disable the fast shutdown for diagnostic purposes and run the SFC as mentioned by other poster. In re mouse do you get the "Mouse not Found" on boot up or is it just squirrely...if squirrely try doing a disk cleanup and defrag.
