Is this a clean install?

Sometimes XP doesn't get on well with the motherboard drivers that are supplied with the board. If you are installing XP, then the board drivers, then the updates, try re-installing without the board drivers.
I know oneinstallation that crashed after defrag if the board drivers were loaded, but was fine without them.

I have seen a couple of hardware combinations that do not work well under XP.

Try removeing both your sound card and modem.
If the system is more stable, then re-install them 1 at a time.

I had to give up my Aureal sound card.
I also have one system that just will not work with an Intel/Ambient modem with XP.

To see the blue screen of death.
in system properties
go to errors and reporting option
the untick the box for automatic reboot,
this should allow the BSOD to be seen.
