Win XP forgets network settings

By steve.parkhouse ·
I have 5 HP Pavilions working to broadband on a peer-to-peer network. Four work OK. If I set up the fifth to work to the broadband router it works fine until I switch of, then it says there is no network. The NIC is seeing the network (says a cable is unplugged if I dis it), but it won't get an ip address (DHCP) from the router. If I repair the connection it works OK until the next time. I have restored it to day one - no good. I have downloaded all MS patches - no good. Any ideas?

can you swap network card's with one that works, see if the problem follows the nic?

update the nic drivers or replace the nic.
I have experienced the same thing (with wireless networks) disable and enable the nic did help.
Since it doesn't do it with w2k, I installed w2k instead continueing troubleshooting xp stuff.
(cheap way out)
It also happens only with xp.

I was having the same problem with my wireless network. I have an HP Pavilion as the host computer. My broadband connection plugs into my router and my router into my Pavilion.

I noticed that if my Pavilion (host) is off, then I lose the connection on my laptop when I reboot. It seems like my laptop with OS XP searches for an "active" connection when booting up.

I leave my Pavilion on now and I have yet to lose my connection.
