Win XP "Printer Name Invalid"

By gmichaels ·
I have a HP Deskjet 720C connected to a Dell system. The printer is installed and working fine and shows up in the control panel. Yet every time I boot the new hardware found wizard launches and tries to reinstall the printer. After letting the wizard select and install the driver, the final message seen is that the installation failed "Printer Name Invalid". Every boot up the same thing over and over again. Tried deleting the printer in control panel and letting the Wizard run, same results and error. Used the Add Printer link to add back the printer manually and all is OK until the next boot. What's going on here?

-Is this the first time you install it?
-remove the printer connection from the system.
-uninstall it from printer and faxes. Reboot the system.
-With the computer and printer on, connect the USB or parallel cable to the printer and the computer.
-If the printer is using a USB cable try to connect it to a different USB port on the system.
-Let the windows detect the printer and install it.
-Go to the link below and follow the steps on how to properly install it.;jsessionid=I40FEZE3J25D5QEXGR5UOSQ?reg=na&cc=us&docName=bpd09005&lc=en&#1

I have already been through all that over and over. This is a deeper problem than just uninstalling and reinstalling.

I have a feeling that the DeskJet 720C has some compatibility issues with XP. Could be wrong and I am happy to be so, but from memory I have seen this problem before and the fix is another printer, unless HP have come up with some XP drivers by now.
