Win XP Pro hangs during boot up

By snoshuu ·
XP Pro has started hanging during boot up, between the Windows splash screen and the logon screen. Hang for over a minute with a black screen before eventually getting to logon screen.
No error messages, plenty of disk space and RAM.
Any ideas?

Download and run the Microsoft utility bootvis.

The utility will help you analyze the boot process, and should identify what program driver or service is at the root of the delay.

Thanks Chas, but the url you provided leads to this.....
"Note: The BootVis.exe tool is temporarily unavailable."

Do you have a copy you could share?

We had about 20 machines do this, they had Matrox video cards and were running Mcafee virus scan. Our approach was to replace the Matrox cards. Switching to Norton Anti Virus also solved the problem.

The other thing I would suggest is to completly remove your virus program and see if the program still exists-- if it does, then download adaware by and check for spyware

Microsoft has pulled it. But you can get it here.

Delete spaces that occur after copy and paste
