Win2k3 Server ISSUES!!!!

By njack2004 ·
After much banging of head on wall/desk/all other nearby hard surfaces I am resorting to posting this as last resort. Last resort because it's hard to quantify this question.

Win2k3 Server running Exchange.

This issue began 3 days ago. Upon reboot of server, the system takes a little while to go through the shutdown procedure, but nothing out of the ordinary. Upon the restart process, it takes FOREVER to even get to a login prompt. (Forever=30-60 minutes). However, Exchange works during this time frame. Once finally at login prompt, log in, takes another 30+ minutes to get to desktop. Again Exchange works with no issues. I am also running Blackberry services and print queues on this server.

Yesterday, print queues were not working and nobody could print. Attempted to restart print services. This operation hung and the service did not respond in a timely manner. This put ths service status into a stopping state. However everything else on the server worked fine. Processor usage is/was 98-99% Idle, and memory usage is around 25% maybe. After troubleshooting last night the server was rebooted and print queues are working as is Exchange, however Blackberry services are not working although services are shown as started and running. When trying to restart the services the same behavior happens as happened with the print queues previously. Again system resources are not being utilized hardly at all. (Proc 98-99% Idle and little memory usage). Attempting to do anything to any service via the mmc causes mmc to appear as if it is not responding. Unable to affect services via command line...receive System Error 1060...The specified service does not exist as an installed service. Have checked for viruses, etc, with none found.

Is this Small Business Server 2003?

Is it a domain controller?

If not a domain contoller, what GPO's are being applied to it?

How much RAM is in this system?

What service packs for the OS and Exchange have been applied?

What events are being reported in the event logs?

Need much more information on this issue before developing a battle plan for resolving.

How many user and mail boxes are on this domain controller?

How large is the global catalog?

How large is the swap file?

Is it holding FSMO roles in addition to being an Exchange system?

It also operating as a Blackberry Enterprise Server in addition to being a domain controller and an Exchange server?

My first thought would be that the system does not have sufficient memory with only 2 gigabytes of RAM and is attempting to use the swap file.

If you turn Performance Monitor on and pull a trace when you login, what are you seeing?

What service packs for the OS and Exchange have been applied? All OS Security patches, SP1 not installed. Exchange 2003 Enterprise SP1 and all Exchange security updates up to date.

What events are being reported in the event logs? Nothing out of the ordinary.

Sounds like you may have a service that is playing up.
It is actually similar to an APC Powerchute issue where it would take forever to boot up.

In terms of diagnosing, run msconfig and disable all services, then reboot - if the slowness and CPU % is not an issue anymore, gradually add the services back in msconfig until your issue appears again.

You should at least be able to narrow down your issue to the exact service this way - you can then start looking at why this particular service is causing an issue.

I saw this before with MSDE installed. Microsoft had said to remove MSDE and reinstall it. Set the MSSQL service to manual and then try and reboot again.

Thanks for all the suggestions. It turns out one fo the security updates failed to completely install. I rolled back the security updates from the day the trouble began and reapplied them. All is well with the server again.
