don't know if you can help me, but trying to help a friend get on the
internet with a modem - its an upgraded 486dx w/new 1G and newcom modem w/drivers - and we've got the modem in the pc, and have installed the drivers that came with the modem, and when
we try to install the isp software there's a message that says
"cannot connect to central computer" .... have called the isp
tech support line, but so far have not been able to talk to a real live person ... i had the same problem before with my computer,
and was able to speak to tech support and they went thru some
routine where thru the control panel and network configuration
they had me delete some stuff so that the only thing left was "client
for microsoft", dial-up, and tcp/ip ... and then i don't remember
what else i had to do ... but my understanding is that i had too
many things in that list .... this modem thing is not my "A" game
'cause i really don't have a full grasp of what all takes place and
how the software and th

The area you are talking about is accessed through the Network icon in control panel. The three things you have listed are correct and are the only things that should be listed. You will need more info from the ISP though, the DNS numbers and domain name. They are usually entered under the TCP/IP settings in the network panel. If you can't speak to tech support with your ISP I would recommend changing ISP to one that cares about customer service.

Good Luck

See above answer. The answer is in the Network properties.

Go to Control Panel and double-click on Network. In the window that appears, you should have Client for Microsoft Networks, TCP/IP and your Dial-Up Adapter. If you don't have these, you can add them by using the buttons below. Client for Microsoft Networks is displayed under Client, Microsoft.

All the best :-)

Actually, you don't *need* the client for Microsoft Networks - all that's necessary is the Dialup Adapter and TCP/IP (although it won't hurt to have the client installed). Once this is set up, check your Dialup Connection Properties, and set your TCP/IP configuration in there (details are available from your ISP). Usually you'll need to set the address(es) of the DNS Server(s); everything else should be assigned when you dial and connect.

Also, check in Device Manager (Control Panel, System,Device Manager) to make sure that the modem is being recognized properly, and that there are no errors. While you're in there, check Network Adapters - make sure that the Dialup Adapter is listed.

THE PROBLEM TO YOU CAN BE DUE TO TWO REASONS.
EITHER THE MODEM SPEED IS TOO HIGH AN CAN NOT BE SUPPORTED BY THE INTERNET ACCOUNT,TO SOLVE IT CHANGE THE MODEM SPEED ACCORDING TO THE SPEED PROVIDED BY YOUR ISP FROM MODEM ICON IN CONTROL PANEL. OR SETYOUR TCP/IP SETTINGS IN CONTROL PANEL ACCORDING TO THE ISP SERVER.BOTH PRIMERY AND SECONDARY DNS SETTINGS.

All are right so far, but to expand on that, under Network Properties (shortcut is to right click Network Neighborhood and select Properties) TCP/IP properties/Wins Config tab, disable Wins. Under DNS tab, disable DNS.
If your using the same ISP asyour friend you can setup your Dial-up Networking entry just like his.
Programs/Accessories/(Win98)Communications/Dial-Up Networking.
Delete the other entries. Doubleclick the "Make New Connection" icon. Follow the wizard and enter the phone number and name and such. After doing that, there will be an icon in the window. Right click and select properties. If you are not dialing long distance, uncheck "Use area code...". Then click the Server Types tab. Uncheck everything except "Use software compression" and TCP/IP at the bottom (if later you still have problems, come back here and uncheck "software compression"). Then select TCP/IP setting button. Enter the Pri and Sec DNS numbers from your friends entry.
Ok everything. Doubleclick theicon and try to conn
