Option 1: Reinstall windows98 over the exsisting version. This would retain all of your data. Then copy your data to another form of media and format then reinstall.

Option 2: Format and reinstall losing your data.

There is probably more ways to fix the problem but if you don’t have much on the machine.. then the best would be start with a clean copy of the operating system to avoid future problems..

start in safe mode, do a virus check. do a spyware check. Run msconfig and disable everything except explorer and systray. sometimes there is a “details” button. if so click it and give us more info (eg. explorer caused a gpf in module so and so).

See this article from TR, it sounds exactly like your problem and is much simpler than reinstalling Windows.

Cut & paste this url into your browser.

Alot of the time with win98 the problem lies with IE being embedded in the os even though Microsoft denies this fact. Windows explorer is just a different skin for good old IE and sometimes a couple critical DLL’s get corrupted or overwritten with older versions which will cause similiar problems to what you are describing. I suggest as a first step you try installing a clean copy of IE.
