Win98 Fatal exception 0d at shutdown

    Hi all,

I have a Dell Inspiron 7000 with an ATI graphics card, and at shutdown at Win98 it crashes with a Fatal Exception 0D has occured at 0028:C00028C6 in VXD VMM(01)+000018C6 – no devices are conflicting in the System control panel, I have thelatest drivers from the Dell web site, and even tried older drivers to see if that fixed it. Any ideas anyone?

      See if the following works:-

      a) Have you installed any software recently, if yes, try to un-install software one at a time.

      b) Change to standard vga driver.

Just a comment. Thing is, VMM is the virtual memory manager module which handles swapfiles and RAM. Just about anything could bring it down. It may not be the graphics card.

Fatal Exception 0D: General Protection Error. Some program is trying to access memory that is out-of-bounds to it.

Try including EMMExclude=C000-CFFF under the [386Enh] section of SYSTEM.INI. This is the segment of memory that is being referenced to in the error message.

Alternatively, try reinstalling Windows 98. It seems like a device driver was installed into VMM.VXD but the external file is now missing.

Could be a lot of reasons. Two of the reasons I have known that caused this problem were Internet Explorer and NIC driver. Upgrade your Internet Explorer. If you have a network card installed, upgrade the driver. You have to remove the NIC card fromthe Device Manager in System applet from Control Panel to successfully upgrade the driver.

      Hope this works for you.

In both Win98 and Win98se, the Advanced Power Management functions and a registry key called Fast Shutdown have both been implicated in shutdown problems.

Information on the problem in Win98 is pretty sparse, but Microsoft has a good troubleshooting guide for the Win98se problems on Technet (article #Q238096).

My sole experience with something similar did, in fact, turn out to be related to the APM implementation on this particular generic motherboard but I’ve heard reports from colleagues of it being apparently associated with certain NIC and video card drivers.

      best wishes,

      paul

I had this problem with a Toshiba Laptop, and actually what helped was using the patch for shut-down problems at Microsoft’s Win 98 Update page, I’d try that first, from what I’ve read this is a common problem in Win 98.

      Hope This Helps,

      Jeff

This may sound a bit odd in this forum, but… Dell has the best Tech Support in the world for PC’s. And if it’s a known issue with a specific driver or device or Win98 they will already know about. Besides you have already paid them for it, might as well get something for your hard earned money.
