    Win98 install on laptop

    Locked

    by rel blackmane ·

I’m trying to install Win98 on Compaq 1235 laptop,
Pentium 266, 64 MB RAM, 4 GB HD. Windows installs and then when it restarts, it gives error: cannot
find vmm32.vxd and it can’t load windows. I tested RAM with memtester86 and checks ok. I scanned HD and it checks. The system is not running hot and the power supply is good.
What am I missing? I can get it going in safe mode but it takes about 3 minutes to load up.
    Any suggestions?

Clear out the folder with the .vxd files
      C:\Windows\System\System32

      Re-install Windows.

Once you have a vxd error, you usually have to wipe out all of the .vxd files and allow Windows to re-create them.

I normally see this error when Windows doesn’t like the RAM used.
The RAM will pass all kinds of DOS mode tests, but Windows has some problem with it.

      Hi,
You could get the Vmm32vxd file from a different computer, Just send it to a floppy.
You said you could get it to boot in safe mode
then you could get the file from the floppy disk
that you put it on and put it in the folder where
it should be C:\windows\system I have seen this before and have done this. I don’t know why
some of the vxd files get lost but sometimes they
do. I have seen as many as 4 vxd’s get lost and
replaced them this way without further problems
fromthe machine. But it’s up to you if you would
rather reload windows you can. But it may happen again, Or a different vxd may turn up missing. I
know it’s the same file in 98 and ME. Like I said I have had several machines do this to me. You can use windows exporer to slip the file into your
system folder. Also you will have to go to start
then settings then folder options. then click the
view tab and select show all files to be able
to see the vxd system files.
      Regards, Gil

I’m sorry, that is happening because your laptop is formated with fat32 and you bios does not really support it. try reformating (I know with more than one partition) with fat 16 and try reinstalling win 98. Thats how I got my old laptop thinkpad towork….

I used to get this error from time to time with various computers. If I remember correctly it cannot find a file called ishelp.sys or ifshelp.sys….I forget exactly.

      Try the following

Boot the computer to safe mode, and look for a file under C:\ called autoexec.bat.
If it exists, include the following in the path PATH = C:\WINDOWS\;C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.
If the file doesn’t exist, go to start, run, type in msconfig and hit okay. Click autoexec, new and enter the path above into the box.Okay out of msconfig and restart the computer.

Windows 98 was never intended for use on laptops. I remember that being a general warning to all users who wanted to have 98 on lappies.

However, I’ve had absolutely no trouble with win98SE on a Compaq LTE5300.

Also – you might want to check out this KB article. Possibly a reason why windows can’t find the file:
