Windows 2000 automatically restarts

By ts1026 ·
A windows 2000 computer is automatically restarting and going to a blue screen. Originally, I thought I had a bad hard drive because there were several errors continuously occuring on the drive. I installed a new drive and reinstalled everything. However, the computer is restarting again and found errors on the drive when I went into the recovery console. My power options are set to never turn off. Any ideas?

Sounds like a bad system board corrupting the software... I've seen this a lot on laptops. Is the system a new one or was it upgraded from another OS? Is the BIOS on the system compatible with Win2000? -- check with the manufacturer's website.

The problem may be a driver that is loading at startup that is corrupt.
Before installing the new hard drive, were their any hardware or software chnges to the system

Read through th Event Monitor under Applications and under System to check for any errors

See Microsoft Knowledgebase article Q174630 to see if it applies to your problem

If it restarts at unusual and/or inconsistent times and you have an Intel based motherboard, you may have encountered the Intel MTH issue. I've seen this on multiple computers in my office and it turns out that the system board had to be replaced.Hopefully if this is the case the computer is still under warranty. Use the link below to get the utility to determine if the computer is affected by this issue.
