Windows 2000/Client 4.71

By Dave Post ·
I have both a Dell GX300 with a Madge Token Ring (yeah, yeah) 100/16/4 and an IBM 600X ThinkPad with a Madge Token Ring MK2 Cardbus. Both have Windows 2000 on them and Novell Client 4.71 on the ThinkPad and as of today Novell Client 4.8 Beta on theDell. The problem is when I log into the network, if I right click on My Computer and select Explore, Explorer starts and immediately closes on both PC's (any way I start Explorer, it does the same thing). If I logon to Workstation only or standalone on the T-Pad, things work the way they are supposed to. Another bug that is similar is when I browse to change my wallpaper and click the up directory button until all network drives are visible, that dialog box disappears also.

You did not say in your message, if Windows
2000 had been patched.
You need to apply the service pack 1.
it is at
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/recommended/sp1/default.asp.
Apply this and then reinstall the novell client.

try this, reboot at the novell login,
login into the windows 2000 only, then
try to map a drive to one of the novell
servers in your network. Are you able to map a drive??
also what version client are you running?
you should be using 4.71.
hasany other software been installed?
I have seen problems when IE 5.5 gets installed, the client has to be reinstalled!

I also have a Madge 100/16/4 and a IBM tr on my laptop. I have not had exactly the problem you have had but I upgraded from win98. I have to use the Client 32 uninstall from the admin folder to kill the client. when I reinstalled it a lot of my network connection and speed issues went away. Also I had a problem with the 2000 sp1 and the novell client. Had to unistall the sp1 and am waiting for 4.8 to be released before I try the 2000 SP1 again.....also look to the Madge driver I had to getthe latest one to get back up and running with Client 4.7.....Good Luck Chuck

I had similar problems with the Madge cards, both CardBus and PCI. I had to remove the Novell client so I could download new drivers from the internet. Be sure to have the high encryption pck installed before installing the new Madge drivers and Novell client. Even with these I needed the very latest 4.71 or 4.8 of the client. I also ran sp1network.exe and upgraded to IE5.5. Both machines run great now.
