Windows 2003 : Print server alias not taken into account when browsing AD

By marc_bourel ·
i've got a Windows 2003 SP1 print server physically named srv001.
In order to prevent users from being impacted if ever the print services are moved to another physical server, i created a dns alias for this machine, names printsys01. (i also added the DisableStricNamesChecking key in the registry)

If the users do map printers on this server after having browsed it using \\printsys01, everything's Ok, the printer is mapped to printsys01.

But if the users do map printers using the Windows XP Wizard, and browse the Active directory, the printer is mapped to srv001, which works fine, but will be inefficient if ever we move the print services for example to srv002 (and change the alias printsys01 to make it match with srv002)

The question is : is there a way to publish printers from a physical server so that they appear in Active directory (or in the wizards) as hosted by the alias ?

i could also tell my users not to browse AD anymore to map printers, but it's not really clean isn't it ?
