Windows 2W3 dcpromo in W2K Domain

by philldmc . Updated 21 years, 5 months ago

I have a stand alone ISA Server running Windows 2003 Server and ISA 2000, named Proxy. This server is NOT a domain controller; it is acting as a stand alone server that is part of our domain. The domain controller is a Windows 2000 based system.

I want to set up a VPN and from what I?ve read in my setup it would be best to have run on the ISA server. I started the process of installing AD on the ISA machine. I ran the adpreps (Forest and Domain) to prepare the Windows 2000 server. All went fine.

However every time I try to dcpromo the 2003 server I get this error:

?The operation failed because:

The promotion failed because the name of local computer is the name of a predefined security identifier. Please rename the computer.

“The requested name already exists as a unique identifier.”?

I went through the AD and DNS and removed anything relating to ?Proxy? name of the Windows 2003 machine. I removed the Proxy from the domain and I still get this error when trying to dcpromo.

All my clients are programmed to communicate with ?Proxy? to access the web. How to I promote ?Proxy? to a DC without having to change the name?
