Check your memory is installed correctly, remove and refit.
Try copying the Windows CD to your harddrive and install Windows from there.

Check to see if your hardware meets the specification required to run win98. I.e. memory and processor. If they do, try resitting the memory and do a reinstall.

Good luck

I do not understand why you ran the system file checker after a fresh install of WIN98. The file checker has a very bad inherent code director problem. If you tell it to replace a certain system file, it will look to the setup .cab instead of the actual file system .cab. I am presuming that you replaced several files. The only cure is to reformat your drive and do a fresh install of WIN98. Do not use the file checker unless you have a problem that you cannot resolve. Most of the system files are quite larger than the setup files. If you question a file, find another PC similar to yours and check the size and datestamp. If you cannot locate the file in the system .cab, make a copy from the other PC and try it, but do not overwrite your old file. Save it with a .sbk or simliar extension. It will make it easier to locate later if you want to restore the file.

I agree with some of the answers (memory)
problems.I would run fdisk and remove your
partitions. Then re-install partitions.Make sure your first partition is made active.
reboot into dos and format your drive(s)
and install windows.Hope this helps.

Thanks but memory is not the problem,I did indeed take it under consideration and did reseat the memory so I could rule it out. But still it was not the culprit. And I did reinstall the partitions and reinstall but problem still there.

Could you post a list of harware in the system? This may help us to solve your problem. Be specific to the chipsets and processor on the items listed, if you say a 4 Mb S3 AGP Video card there are somthing like 6 different chipsets and processor styles that could easily match that description. You may have a piece of hardware that may load there drivers after the first statup like USB or other devices. To solve this problem I would remove all but the required hardware to do an install (Video,MB,CPU,Mem,HDD,KB,FDD) first use a CDROM to copy the CAB's to the HDD under WIN98 Directory then remove it. Next restart thr computer an boot from the HDD (this can be accomplished by SYS C: from the Bootable CD or using /S when you format the drive). Install your fresh copy of WIN98 configure the basic Devices. Then satrt adding other hardware until you run in to your current problem back thast piece of hardware out of the system and replace it with another simmilar device.
