windows can't get through

By dgstarch ·
can anyone help me with this? I have an IBM thinkpad with WIN98. Why is it that when I boot it up a Microsoft Registry Checker pops-up and prompted me 'You have restored a good registry. The windows found an error in your system files & restored a recent back-up of your files to fix up the problem'. It asked me to press enter to restart but when I did it keeps on coming back to that window and can't go through my windows desktop. Please help!!!!

Win98 has by default 5 backup copies of the registry stored on the hard drive.
Everytime a corrupt rergistry is detected it marks it, then it tries to load the next earliest backup, you reboot, and so forth.
That all of the copies appear to be corrupt, points to a virus.
The chances that all five copies of the registry went corrupt at the same time are slim because Win98 backs up the registry only once per day.
That means a minimun of five days, and longer for every day the computer was notused.
Therefore: The first thing to do is to boot on a antivirus floppy and check for viruses.
Regards, Chris

While the system is booting and when it just comes to that Win98 Logo part.. as quickly as you can.... press F8 key simultaneously. A menu should pop up, choose Safe Mode or other modes to see ther effeects :-D

Go to Start, run and type: msconfig. Go to the start tab. Clear the check in scanregistry and click OK. This will cause windows to not scan the registry during startup. You should go the microsoft website and find the instuctions to restore your registry.
