Windows detected a registry error

By bwilkening ·
"Windows detected a registry error." I get this message at least once or twice a week. I am running Win98SE, 450 Celeron, 128M. My "goof around" PC. I thought it might be dirty power so I have a line conditioner and it stopped for awhile but is now back with a vengance. I have tried everything I can think of.

Any hints or ideas?

Thanks,
Brent

Windows detected a registry error

by earnest In reply to Windows detected a regist ...

We have had this problem on a group of pcs we have imaged for us. When changing the registry < adding/removing apps > the next boot we get "Windows has detected a registry error. Windows will fix this. Reboot the PC". Sometimes he will fix it until the next change. We have had success in only two ways. The first is to boot to dos promprt and run scanreg /fix. This will sometimes rebuild the registry. The only other fool proof way is to reload win98 onver itself. This will truly rebuild the registry. Lately I have taken to going into msconfig and deselecting the scanregw program in bootup. I haven't had any other types of system errors. I have extracted the scanreg program but it makes no difference. I am thinking in the back of my mind that it maybe the scanreg program itself that is damaged. We have been incorporating the microsoft updates into all out pc and this also might be part of the problem. Microsoft may be corrupting the registry on updates or the scanreg programs may be bad. Still the only real fixes have been the first two. The others have been runnin in the back of my mind?

Good Luck;
Bo

This problem happens whether or not I have added/removed programs. That's what has me stumped. There doesn't seem to be a correlation to anything in particular.

This can be an indication of bad or incompatible memory. For diagnostic purposes try changing out the ram.
