Windows installs PCI Bus Master IDE cont

By pfbariteau ·
I have a IBM Thinkpad a21m laptop. It is having trouble getting on the Internet and other problems.

Under Control Panel>System>Device Manager>Hard disk controllers it shows two devices labelled "Standard Bus Mastering IDE Controller." It also shows a device called "Intel 8237AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller." This device conflicts in IRQ as well as with memory locations with the other controllers. Every time I remove this conflicting device and reboot, Windows automatically finds it and reinstalls the driver. How can I get rid of it?

You are attempting to get rid of the wrong controller.
Try removing the standard bus mastering IDE controller.

(this assumes that the Thinkpad has an Intel chipset installed)

You should end up with 2 IDE devices.
The bus mastering IDE controller, and a primary IDE controller.

You may need to delete ALL IDE controllers, and re-boot in order to get rid of the duplicate.

If you still have problems, download and install the latest system drivers for your ThinkPad and version of windows from IBM.
