Windows ME . . . a MEmory hog?

By jfinn ·
Has anyone seen issues with ME eating up loads of RAM? Have 256MB on a P500 and the at least 1/2 of that is taken just on boot up. While this PC has many 'startup' programs, even with those disabled. . . ME take over 100MB. Is this typical? I cannotfind anything at uSoft.com which helps. TIA

Well, DUH!! YES!

by ARG CIO In reply to Windows ME . . . a MEmory ...

Windows ME has followed in the tradition of Microsoft products; The new versions use more memory. the tradeoff? More features, better interface, etc. Take the PC down to 128MB of Memory, ME will use less on boot. Take it up to 512MB, and ME will use more on boot! That is the nature of the beast. NT and W2K do the same thing. (98 isn't much better.)

It won't be cut in half when you go to 128MB, but it should be less.(Same the other way, it won't double when you upgrade to 512MB, but it should be more.)

Microsofts fist answer to everything? ADD MORE MEMORY!!!!!

ME won't even recognize new memory!!

by tra15 In reply to Well, DUH!! YES!

I installed 256 MB memory to my PC (Compaq) and ME won't even recognize it no matter what I've done. Re-booted drive by driver, etc. What to do?
