By jorge_55555 ·
My computer originally came with a demo of Windows Me, which has already expired after post it gives me a message telling me I can't use it anymore, I have however purchased the CD now, but my question is will I have to nuke my old Windows Me and reinstall or is there any other way of keeping all the files and programs that are on the exisisting expired Windows Me?

Windows Me reinstall

Dear jorge,

As a technician, I have an Idea for you.

Try re-installing Windows ME and note that you re-install the Windows on the same directory as the original directory.

An example is if your windows is on C:\WINDows then install Windows Millenium Edition on the same, i.e. C:\WINDOWS.

This usually helps it when you DO NOT want your machine to have Dual Boot(e.g Win 9X and Win NT).

(JUST FOR YOU TO KNOW)

If you want your machine to Dual boot, you will have to install WINDOWS NT in another directory.

Hope you clear ur doubts.

Did you get an upgrade or a full version of Windows ME,it will determine how you will setup the new software, the trial version will not register and using the upgrade you may have to start fresh,it is programmmed to upgrade WIN 95,WIN 98,WIN98SE.Tryusing the cd only and see if you can run set up,if this does not work you will have to start fresh

I would like to know how you got a copy of Windows ME (any final release, not beta or trial) if it doesn't release here in NY till the 14th.
Just wondering if there were different release times across the country.

Before loading the WIN ME version from the cd - Backup your most important files with a zip, jazz, or cd-r. Also, create a boot disk just in case the install fails. Go to >Control Panel > Add-Remove Programs > Startup Disk ---

It would not hurt to copy your C:\windows directory.

WINME is touted to be an extremely time consuming and difficult installation. It lacks many useful drivers (as an example it does not currently support Epson Printers).

I suggest after loading, install theDriver Detective found at
(http://www.DriversHQ.com/main_home.html)

If some of your peripherals/devices do not work, try WIN2000 patches or fixes that can be found all over the 'net. Be aware - some will work some will not. (did not work for epson - advised customer to buy a different printer)

In the end, if the install completely fails, or this appears to be too much work, you will have to reformat the drive to reinstall WIN98/SE.

Goodluck!
