First rule of thumb, if possible, perform a CLEAN install. Upgrading only increases your problems. Clean installation of any OS is usually recommended. Especially if you are upgrading from ME to XP. Did you change your filesystem to NTFS or is it still FAT32? Sometimes converting to NTFS will resolve most problems.

Fact is, Me was problematic from the start so upgrading, no matter how stable the new OS is, many of the problems you encountered before will carry over into the new setup and sometimes create new ones as in this instance. In some cases, the issues may be amplified.

I know that this may not be the answer you want to hear, but my advice would be to back up what you can and do a complete unstall of XP, formatting the drive with NTFS. Boot to your CD-ROM (if necessary, change the boot order in your BIOS Setup utility and set the CD-ROM as the first boot device. Reboot and when asked, delete the partition you are installing to, then create a new one. After that, you will have the option to format with the NT File System or FAT32, select NTFS. I guarantee you will have much more desirable results than you hare having now. This will eliminate most if not all the problems you are having currently.

Hope thishelps and good luck! :)

With Windows I never upgrade, always clean install. I've never had a good experience with an upgrade whether I'm going from 95 to 98 or to 2000 or XP there always seems to be bugs afterwards. I find the extra time it takes to do a clean install saves a lot of time in the future.
