Windows Media Player quit working

By heckfire ·
Windows Media Player keeps telling me via error message that there is no sound card and/or that the sound card if installed is not working. The thing is I think the sound card must be fine because I can play media via Quicktime and Realplayer. And, I have sound events on my desktop theme. Can it be that WMP just doesn't 'see' the sound card? And if so how can I point the card out to it?

It sounds like a 'Direct Sound'issue, RealPlayer uses Wave Out not Direct Sound which would be dependant on your sound driver and configuration.

You can get information and a Direct Sound registry fix here:

If the link doesn't work, try this one about halfway down the page you will see a section called Audio Problems.

There are two links, one titled 'Wav Out' for the reverse problem to yours and the other is 'this' on the next line, that will give you the Direct Sound swith('this' should fix your problem).

If you are still having problems, post back with system and sound card details. But the above links have worked for me several times with different machines.
