Windows Protection Error

By tmunkres ·
While Initializing Device IOS:
Windows Protection Error. You need to restart your computer.

OK, what's up?

I've looked up the error. 3Com claims it is due to a memory allocation conflict. They suggest an updated driver, but their drivers only will update if you get INTO Windows. I can't.

Windows 95, 3c905c, Award BIOS 4.51, 500Mhz CPU, etc.

I've deltree'd the Windows dir and even gone so far as to re-format the HD. Removed the NIC. Reset BIOS to reset the PNP settings. Re-Installed repeatedly. All to no avail.

Suggestions??

Try replacing your memory because it might just be a bad memory module. That should work but if it doesn't then see if you can update the drivers in safe mode.

Good luck,

Thanks for the tip, but trading out the RAM didn't do anything. I pulled both sticks, tried one, tried the other, tried different (new) sticks, etc. All to no avail.

Thanks anyway!! I appreciate the suggestion!

I've had this one many time before. The most common cause I'd seen is a problem with 3rd party IDE controller drivers. It can be difficult to correct. If the PC will boot into safe mode, then you can go into the system control panel and remove asmany of the IDE controller drivers as you can. Then restart normally. Windows _should_ start and find the IDE controller again. DO NOT RESTART when propmted!!!!! Wait until you get to a Windows desktop, then SHUTDOWN. Power off and on the PC and hopefully everything will work as expected.

If this doesn't work, another more drastic repair my be called for. Let me know, and I'll shre it with you.

The IDE controller is on-board and I can't get to the system properties anyway since I cannot even get in running in Safe Mode. I've pulled everything except the vid card, formatted the HD, and re-installed completely. All to no avail.

What is your drastic remedy suggestion???

Traci,

A number of issues can be causing this error but I owuld start by removing all references to smartdrv.exe. You have to boot off a floppy to do this or boot into a safe dos prompt.

1. Boot Windows 95 in Safe mode or to a command prompt.

2. Perform one of the following two steps:- Edit the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files and disable any references to Smartdrv.exe. To disable a line, type "rem" (without the quotation marks) at the beginning of the line.

find and rename Smartdrv.exe to another name.

3. Restart your computer normally.

Been there, done that. Even re-formatted it (twice, I am ashamed to admit). Have removed the entire contents of the drive and re-installed. Pulled all hardware, except for mon, keyb & mouse out. Told the CMOS to re-set all the PNP settings. I renamed Autoexec.bat to Autoexec.crap and Config.sys was empty, created a new Autoexec.bat that was empty. Killed the WIn.INI and System.INI before re-installing. Etc. All of this over a span of two days, off 'n' on. It's gotta be a hardware issue.

I just got that same message on a pc here about two weeks ago. Here is the problem, the 3com 3c900 and 3c905 adapters and windows 95 on certain machines are causing the windows proctection error on boot of the system.

Solution: I can send you the file it is only 112 bytes. What you need to do is copy wpefix.exe into c:\windows or c:\windows\system and execute the file.(I put it in both places to be sure.) Fixes windows proctection error caused by confict between 3com and win95.

Let me know if you want this emailed to you my email addres is as follows:

Are you using an AMD processor? I had this problem before and it was due to my AMD processor and a known bug with Windows 95. I had to download a patch to get it to boot. Try this article from Microsoft.

I hope this helps you.
