Windows registry error

By Tracer ·
Hi all-

I've been running into a strange problem when installing Win98SE on my machine. A window keeps popping up that says "Windows has encountered a problem accessing the registry. Windows will reboot and fix the problem."
Well, it reboots, but never fixes the problem. I'll get that error message repeatedly.
I've FDISKed my computer, formatted the hard drive, FDISKed the master boot record and I still get this error. On one occasion, I also got an error involving the SETUPX.DLL. I'll assume these are related, but I don't know how.
Any suggestions from you more knowledgable folks? Thanks!

Sounds though that setup does not do its complete registry entry as there is an error in an important dll file.

My suggestion is to borrow another copy of Windows 98 and try that or try the original software on a different machine.

During setup windows protects files it uses and then unprotects them when finished - but since the setup was not complete the phase was never complete.

See if you can copy from DOS prompt the file setup.dll from CD to hard disk - if there is no error copyingthan the corruption can only be fixed by replacing the file.

If you are registered user microsoft should give you a free replacement of the software.

Good luck.

Sorry, spiceman, but I've tried two different installation disks for Windows, and I had the same error. Turns out it was incompatible RAM (PC66 RAM with a Pentium II). Thanks, though!

You might want to try doing a surface scan of the hard disk just to make sure everythings alright.

After I got things up and running, I did do a thorough disk scan, and there were errors. Unfortunately, I didn't find this out until after I'd gotten up and running! Damn that RAM! Thanks for the help.
