Windows security

By daddydold52 ·
The last Week or so, I have been receiving mail in a window called "Messenger Service" directly to my I.P. address. I initially thought this might be a worm of some kind, so I ran a virus scan using McAfee, with the latest dat file available, but Itturned up nothing. Any ideas on where this is coming from? Thanks...

Are you talking about the little box that comes up when someone sends a "net send" message? Do you know your computername?

Tyr sending a message to yourself by going to a Command (or MS-DOS) prompt and typing in the following:

net send computername hi

You should then get a box comming up that says "Messenger Service" and then below it.... "Message from computername to computername on date time" and then the next line should say "hi"

That's a "net send" command and it comes from Windows. In the message box, it should give you the computername of the sender.

If you are receiving e-mail in this window, then someone is piping e-mail to you through a "net send" statement-- which is a rather odd way to send mail. Net send is usually for quick brief messages, such as "pickup the phone, it's me" or "meeting in 5 minutes in room x" or whatever from someone else in the office needing something (and knowing how to use the net send command).
