Windows Update Server ??

By unclebyron ·
If it is possible, we would like to create a Windows Update Server that would have the service packs/critical patches/updated drivers etc. of our choosing
( rather than running AutoUpdate on each computer ) for the Windows XP machines in our company. The patches/drivers would be deployed through a group policy upon login. Can the patches/drivers/service packs be downloaded from Microsoft as files or just as part of the Windows Update mechanism that does everything automatically for you?

Are there any suggestions about how this might be setup if it can be done?

Microsoft has a number of tools that you can use.

For starters, there is the Windows Update Catalog page:

From here you can manually download most Windows updates.

Then, there is Software Update Services:

There are also 3rd party options.

You would use Windows Update Services,(Formely Windows Software Update Services)

Also known as WUS.

If you goto this page:

You can download the Server and client program, which you install on an IIS machine. Once installed you can go in and approve/disapprove updates for the clients to download.

Your clients will only download and install the approved updates.
