IF you have the shutdown supplement installed, the next step is to update the following drivers in sequence:
AGP mini-port driver for the chipset on your motherboard. check out the tools at www.motherboards.org or www.wimsbios.com if you need help identifying your motherboard.
DirectX (from Microsoft) verify the minimum and latest version supported by your video card mfg.
Video card driver. Also check with the card manufacture for a video BIOS update.
That usually takes care of W98 shut down problems.
If you are still having problems, there is a very good shutdown trouble-shooting guide posted at www.aumha.org
Go to the Microsoft update site and download the 98SE Shutdown Supplement patch to the system, make sure you download it to a file that you can find easy. drop all network and dialup connections before you run the patch. Cut and paste this address into your browser, and save it in your favorites for future use. Good Luck http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/corporate.asp
