Windows xp Pro as a File Server

I recently changed my file server from a win 2000 box to a win xp pro box. I transferred all the files from the 2000, into the xp and when I try to save anything to the folders brought over from the 2000 box I get a read only error even though I go to the XP box and uncheck read only.

Make sure the security on the folders is set properly

XP Pro gives you the ability to change your security settings easily, but only if you turn off “Simple File Sharing”. Oddly enough, do this in a folder properties, folder view options.

Turn that guy off and you will get a magical security tab where you can manually set your security settings.
