windows98 set-up error

is it always on 70%?

if it is, check the memory and try upgrading the system BIOS or sometimes DOWNGRADING system BIOS.

also, depending from your hardware, updating windows installation with newer drivers will help

I had almost the same problem with ASUS P3B-F motherboard and Win98

I would bet on bad memory. If you have multiple modules pull one set out, normally I would start with the upper set then if it doesn't get better swap.

I had this same problem when I installed 95 it would hang at almost the same spot.
The problem was a defective video card when 95 tried to load the driver it would hang.
The best way to trouble shoot this is remove all your extra cards ie. Sound, 3D, scanner, extra memory leave 32mb, etc.
Then install 98 as you normally would. Don't worry about the drivers not installing 98 will detect them later. If it installs normally then insert your cards one at a time rebooting in between. When you getthe error you have found your problem.
Let me know if you need more specific help.

A fatal exception error on install usually occurs in one of two areas. Either a bad or failing video card or a bad or failing memory strip. WIN98 will load and install with 32 meg Ram. Remove all mods, leaving only 32 installed and retry. Swap mods if problem reocuurs. If problem continues, swap out video card with a known GOOD one. It does not matter if it is a 4/8/or 16 meg card. Attempt the install. Usually at the 70% install, Win98 is installing upper memory drivers and dlls and a memory error at this time will cause your fatal error.
