Windows98 won't play music CD

By gac1425 ·
I have a CDROM and a CDRW (through USB port) attached to my computer which is using Windows98. I was having problems with my computer becoming unresponsive when playing a music CD through the USB connected CDRW. The music played fine but the computer becomes unresponsive and has to be interupted with ctl-alt-del. The CDROM worked fine. In trying to solve this problem I downloaded new sound drivers and installed them. Now neither the CDROM nor the CDRW will play a music CD. I get the message "Program not Found", "Windows cannot find Play",.. "Play is needed to open files of type: 'AudioCD'". How can I solve this problem and get my CDROM to play music again and my CDRW to play music and be responsive. Thanks for any ideas.

Try downloading Windows Media player 7.0 from Microsoft and use that program to play all the audio files.

Another thing to try is to delete multimedia support in control panel - add/remove programs and choose removing the multimedia sections windows files and then re-install it again after rebooting. Then ensure that you update Windows 98 with all the fixes from www.windowsupdate.com

Good luck

CDRW:
The cause of your problems may not be the sound driver but rather it is the driver for the usb CDRW. When you do the ctrl-alt-del to kill the cd player application, does the system indicate the application is not responding? Have you check for update firmware upgrade for your CDRW?

Playing Music CD again:
Have you try re-installing the CD-player application? You can do this through control panel/add&remove application/Windows98 native apps tab/multimedia section/cd player.

Good luck.

There is a cable from the CDROM to the sound card internally, that sends the audio from the CD straight to the card. I have no clue, why you would want to play cd's on ur external drive. The answers my fellow member have given you are very good answers, but the way i figure, your computer has the internal cable running from the CD to the sound card. Use the burner to burn, the reg. CDROM to listen to your tunes.

Peace!
Ryan

A Music CD can play while the system hangs. Is the cable from your CDROM connected to your sound card? If it is not, then try it and it should play your CD though the system could still hang, etc.
Try deleting all sound drivers and install Media Player 7. I am using it and it's much better than the previous version. Use it as your default player. It should work.
