Wired/Wireless Network

By K.Grass ·

I'm trying to setup a wired/wireless network using a DLink wireless router. One XP machine has an RJ-45 jack plugged in and the other machine is a Windows Me laptop with the wireless adapter. Problem is is that the network connection is not happening.

Both machines can access the Internet and WEP has been enabled on the laptop. After running the Network Setup Wizard on both machines you'd think it should work; it's not. What am I doing wrong here? TIA

I am assuming they are accessing the internet via the router.
That means they are networked else they would not have been able to access the internet.

so it's only communication between is not working.
first try to disable the windows firewall on the xp system.
second have identical accounts and passwords on both machines. a dos prompt and type "ipconfig" on the xp machine and "winipcfg" on the windows me machine (btw windows me sucks, better to have 98 or 2000 or xp). The ipconfiguration that you got should be in the same network (concludes from the previous remark that they access the internet through the router) . From one machine try to ping the other machine.
If succesfull you should be able to share resources , etc between the 2 machines.

Often the wizard does not work, do the changes in that case manually.

here's a link also to trouble shoot network connections
