Wireless laptop to wired desktop

By nymous ·
Here's the situation:
I am using a laptop that is sharing a wireless connection with a friend from his wireless router. This laptop has a wireless card and a regular ethernet port. I want to get net access on my desktop. The only way that I can do this is by attaching it to this laptop. I have a small router I can use, but I'm having trouble. I don't even need to use the laptop, I just want the signal to go to my desktop (i.e. I wouldn't care if the laptop was just one big wireless card for my desktop). Any suggestions?

Most wireless routers have LAN line connections. You can plug in via cable. If not, or if you really just want wireless, get a wireless PCI or USB card in the desktop and set it up to use the wireless connection

The positioning of the wireless router doesn't allow me to hook the desktop to it. These are in different rooms and the router needs to be where it is.

I'm not looking for wireless. What I want to do is get the wireless that my laptop is receiving from the other room to serve access to my desktop using my laptop. It just seems like there should be a solution to this without buying a wireless card for my desktop.

You should be able to enable Internet Connection Sharing on the laptop.

You need to setup the laptop as the ICS server, and the desktop as an ICS client.

If you need step by step instructions, let us know what OS is on each PC.

Both machines are Windows XP Pro

I agree with chas - ICS is the way to go. If you could just post which OS you are using on the laptop then we will be able to give better instructions on this.

Wireless cards or USB wireless adapters are cheap - go get one for your desktop and don't fool with ICS. If you forget your laptop or it's not turned on then the desktop does not get network access.

Spend the $20.00.

I had to do something very simular recently. I have a wireless ap in my home that is connected to the internet via a linksys router. I had a friend coming over to work on a project together. He brought his desktop that only had a wired 10/100 port. My laptop has a built in wifi card and a wired port. The room where we setup was too far to run a cable easily, so I made a crossover cable and plugged his PC into my laptop. My laptop was connected to the AP. Then, I went into my network connections and CTRL clicked my wifi connection and my lan connection so that they were both selected, right clicked and choose to bridge the connections. After a minute or two (max) his PC was part of my home network.... as if he were wired directly in.

Just get a usb wireless adapter for the desktop and get on with it.
