Wireless Net Not Working

By summerdusk ·
My new laptop is supposed to have wireless internet. The internet works fine, but only if I put in the modem. What's wrong with it?

Check Wireless Hardware

by Bobbanana In reply to Wireless Net Not Working

Are you able to confirm that your wireless card in your laptop is enabled. Some laptops have a enable/disable switch/button. If it is enabled you should have an Icon in the system tray or browse to network connections and enable the wireless.. Once enabled you should be able to search for wireless networks and connect using your security key.

Good luck

Rather than you panicking that it's not working - let some of the peers check it out for you.

Make and model will get us started.

Try this first

If your computer is "suppose" to have a wireless, verify these things first.

(1) Click start and right click My Computer

(2) Go to "Device Manager" (If you have Vista, Device Manager will be in the upper-left hand corner of your new window...If you have Windows XP click the "Hardware" tab first and then select "Device Manager".)

(3) Expand the "Network Adapters" directory. If you have a wireless card you should see two entries for Network Adapters and one of them should have the word "wireless" some where in the title. If you don't see two entries you do not have a wireless card.

(4) If you have a wireless card, right-click on the wireless card icon to "enable" or "disable" your wireless card. Make sure that it is enabled.

(5) Also while you are here, right click on the wireless card icon and select "Update Drivers". Normally, it will not hurt to do this and might actually fix the problem.

(6) If you accomplish all this, and still cannot access your wireless network, write back. Most likely any laptop that you buy today will have a wireless card, so it could be several other things.
