Wireless network

By nu4ever ·
I want to setup a wireless home network with a desktop and a laptop. I have cable internet. Do I need to get 2 wireless adapters along with the router or one. Both computers have network connections in them. Can I use a 3ft patch cable and hook it up to desktop. Then use a wirelss adapter on the laptop?

I mentioned that this was with a desktop and laptop. That's not true it's two desktops.

You absolutely can use a patch cable for the desktop and the wireless part for the laptop and have them both share files/printers/etc no problem (I have a similar setup myself).

I recommend the D-link 802.11G (DI-624) router with the 4 port switch built in. That way if you get another computer or two your'e still set.

Also - make sure on the wireless router you set WPA-PSK encryption (which is available when you upgrade your firmware) and turn off SSID broadcasting (which will keep "wardrivers" from easily detecting your wireless network).

The 802.11G is nice and fast, I hardly notice a speed difference from my desktop on the network.

With a wireless PCI card, it will work the same way with a desktops as it will with a laptop.

Sgt is right, the D-Link part I mentioned is an integrated wireless access point, 4 port switch, and a router all in one. D-Link PCI cards work well with this - I've set one up with this configuration the user has had 0 problems in 6 months.
