Can you be a bit more specific?

Im not sure I follow, what is your question exactly? WAN technology itself, security technology that is ciphering and de-ciphering packets in the vpn tunnel to and from a site or you want to know about the routers??

The question is about Wireless WAN tecnology and Design

Thanks 2BlueUK

Here is my problem, I have recently began working on a thesis project and I have to design a Wireless WAN using a network simulator , in the study case that I should design I have to connect 5 college campus networks to each other and each college is located in distant province distributed in my country, but my supervisor didn?t agree to me to use mobile method to connect such as GPRS or telephone method such as PSTN, cauz my specialization should be on network not mobile.

So I read in cisco CCNA that there is an option of using the Internet as WAN infrastructure to be able to use wireless protocol , and because of security risks when using broadband service to access the corporate WAN over the Internet I should use VPN. Idon?t know if what I understood is true or flase.

So am asking about the ability to connect the wireless router of each college to the other colleges? routers through Internet!!? And if that is valid I would use VPN to provide security.

I think I said too many but I hope you know what am talking about know, so if anyone has any any technology or method to build a wireless WAN to satisfy the connection of those colleges, but I would prefere not to use mobile, I would be sooooooooo thankful for any help.

Well..

..from what I understand in your query, yes, you can use wireless to connect your campuses but under two conditions. You need "line of sight", meaning there cannot be any obsticle between your sites (like a mountain for instance). There is also a limit to the distance you can have between sites. You can place repeaters in between if distance is too long, or use satellite. It all depends on your budget.

Now Internet is a great way to connect distance places, but it's not wireless onto itself. You Internet provider can have a wireless setup, but it has to be connected at some point, to a land installation.

For security purposes, you absolutely need VPN. Without it, your traffic can be scanned, read, hacked, etc. VPN is an security method that encrypts your traffic so only the receiving end can understand, decrypt and read the data.

I hope this helps
