    Word 97 – Rubbish in document after savi

    A customer called me the other day complaining that whenever she saved a document, the next time she opened it, a bunch of nonesense appeared before and after her typed words. I told her to delete the normal.dot file but that did not solve the problem. Here is the text of a sample file she emailed me. The only thing she actually typed was “This is a test.” Any ideas would be appreciated.

      I suspect the “Save As” mode is haywire. Go to Tools | Options, Save tab at the top. The Save Word Files items should be set for Word Document. If that’s set correctly, explore the Compatibility tab. All the boxes should not be checked, less unusual circumstances.

      Also, check to see if there are any strange macros in the system in any of the Office programs. A macro that is activated during the save process could be retrieving the document properties that are listed and writing them to the document.

      She is seeing the binary header for the document. When she goes to File…Open, her Files of Type is set on Recover Text From Any File. Just change that to All Files, or All Word Documents and the problem will go away.
