Word without menus

By brifd1 ·
Situation: networked Wintel PC. MS Office 2000 installed on a shared drive.
Yesterday, upon opening MS Word for the first time that day, it opened without any menus. I tried right-clicking, but the commands therein are limited. I clicked elsewhere on the open document, nothing. Finally, a tech support person came over, and we deleted the normal.dot item on my "c:" drive. The same situation existed, even after rebooting. Short of reinstalling the software, is there any other way to remedy this situation???

Please include this email in your response: brian.doennebrink@zoo.org
Thank you!

Also of note: it's only Word, none of the other MS Office programs, that's "behaving badly"!

Possible causes:

Full Screen is selected on the View menu.

The menu bar or toolbars, or both, are not activated.

A macro is running when Word is started.

A program (such as a Word add-in) has modified the user interface, hiding toolbars or changing your settings.

The Windows registry contains a damaged Word Data key.

You click Print Preview.

Check this Microsoft page:

Try the registry bit first.

TWO ANSWERS:
1)Hit ESC, if the View is set wrong you will not get menus. Go to View and ensure that the correct view is being displayed.

2)It's a bug that is quite common to Word2000.
MSKB article: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q211/7/93.ASP

There are a few changes to the above noted fix that you will need to perform.
This may be a two part post, I'll see how space goes.

Modify that Q211793 basic procedure slightly as follows:
In the Saving and Deleting Registry Entries" section:
Under "Deleting the Data Subkey"

Change:
"5. With the Data folder selected (on the left),click Delete on the Edit menu to delete the subkey" to read:

"5. With the Data folder selected (on the left),
a. use the "Registry" item on the RegEdit menu and select "Export Registry File". In the box "Selected Branch" you should see the same name that appears in Step 4 in the article.

b. In the file name box use your name as the file name and select a folder to save the .REG file that will be created (note it's a small file)Click 'Save'.

c. With the Data folder still selected (on the left) click Delete on the Edit menu to delete the subkey"

Step 5c should solve the problem if renaming normal.dot did not.

This info was found on Deja.com newsgroups, but I have used it to repair the same issue in my office.
