Workgroups

By Pauldez ·
I have two laptops. I am not as savvy as most people and have had no formal training. I want to link a Windows 98 laptop to a Windows XP laptop using ethernet connection. I tried the wizard but I must be lacking some vital information because it doesn't work.

Workgroups

Using the ethernet connections on both computers, you will need a "crossover" cable (or a hub between the two computers to act as the crossover part of the communication). The normal cables will not work. Once the proper cable is connected and the computers are powered on, you should see link lights on the computers' nic -- if no lights, then the cable has a problem or the network adapter.

Secondly, you will need to setup the network properties (Control Panel --> Network --> and make sure both computers are in the same network... TCP/IP properties need to be like 192.168.1.1 / subnet mask 255.255.255.0 on one computer and 192.168.1.2/255.255.255.0 on the second.

Third, both computers must have the same Workgroup name. And if you want to see the computers in Network Neighborhood (Win9 or My Network Places (WinXP), then you will need to "Add" the Microsoft NetBEUI protocol.
