XP 2 unable to contact domain controller

By lmayeda ·
I am trying add an XP SP2 workstation to an existing network but am having problems getting the XP to join the domain. Error "domain controller for the domain xxxxxx could not be contacted? I am able to ping the domain controller's and gateway's IP addresses but cannot ping the workstation from the DC. I am logged on as the PC admin. I tried both static and DHCP IP addresses for the workstation and have turned the firewall off. What am I missing? Please help

Ran into a similar problem trying to join an XP client to the domain. My drastic, but effective, solution was to do a clean re-install of XP with the client PC connected to the network. It then connected without any problems.

PC in question had been setup peer to peer previously. That may have had an effect. Shouldn't but seems like it did.

Maybe someone has a less drastic solution.

This is a brand new XP and shouldn't be too "messed up". I know when I move PC's (XPs included) from one domain to another, I have them join a workgroup then join the new domain ... no problemo. I had a problem with another XP not seeing the nstwork... in that case I had to disable the firewall. In this case, the server seems to be finicky. Thanks for trying ...

Folks... I was able to solve the problem with some advice from my friend Mark ... everyone should have a Mark to fall back on. In my case, the name of the workgroup was the same as the same of the domain and for some reason, the XP or server got confused. I changed the workgroup name from xxx to yyy, rebooted and then joined the xxx domain and there was no problem. I don't seem to recall having this issue with W2Ks but I won't look a gift horse in the mouth.
