XP/2003 Server VPN and local network printer problem

by rperdon . Updated 19 years, 3 months ago

I have a remote XP client accessing a 2003 Small Business Server. Printer is a Mobile HP 460WF printer.

Client is at a hotel using local access on a 192.168.1.x DHCP network with 255.255.255.0 subnet and a 192.168.1.138 gateway.

Office server is running a 10.137.21.x DHCP network with 255.255.255.0 subnet and a 10.137.21.1 gateway.

VPN works fine. Client is able to connect to exchange, access shared/network drives etc. When I connect remotely to the laptop to install the printer, it will not install properly.

The problem is that the local network printer will refuse to install properly if configured wirelessly. When the network port is assigned to the printer, it is assigned a 169.254.1.1 IP address indicating lack of communication between the local network, the laptop and the printer.
