    XP Computers won’t share files

    Locked

    by douglasb ·

I have a customer with two computers on a peer to peer network, both running XP Home. Computer A holds the office files, WordPerfect and MS Word. Computer B gets error message that there are no rights to open/modify the files when trying to access computer A. Files sharing is set, persmissions seem to be set in sharing. Created duplicate user on both machines. Can see all files from either machine. Files older than three weeks can be opened and modified. Any ideas? Thanks.

Have you looked at the permissions of the files themselves? My guess is the files that can’t be opened have different permissions than the ones that can be accessed.

Thanks for your response. Yes, I have looked at the permissions, they were marked as read only, I changed that, still did not help.

If it is not in premissions, try unsharing both computers and then resharing both computers. Be sure to share the Shared Documents folders on both machines. Sometimes a share gets corrupted and this sometimes restores it.

I re-shared the “shared documents” did not help. However, I created a new folder, copied all the files from “shared documents” into it, shared the new folder and all works fine. Thank you.

I have run into this same problem it turned out to be two seprate issues in my case. Folder perimisions on the computer with the shared files had become corrupted, i.e. even though the folder was shared with full control or read\write permissons, subfolders & files would show read only attributes. back tracking up the directory tree I found that permisions for the documents & settings folder were corrupt & that files had been moved from the built in shared files folder to a new folder. I reinstalled the operating system as by the time I got to it, 3 other techs plus two “computer gurus” had been working on it.
After this I found that Wordperfect itself was corrupt on the second computer as well and had to be unistalled & reinstalled.

This has to be a permissions issue. When you share the folder, do you click on the option to allow user to make changes? Also, with the NTFS file system, you have shared permissions and NTFS permissions. Make sure that both permissions allow for the modifications that you are trying to perform. When NTFS and Share permissions are used, I believe that the most restrictive permission wins.

One last thing, in your Local Area Connections settings, be sure that File and Printer Sharing is installed and enabled on both computers.

When you create a share in XP home, only the “guest” account has access to them. Does the guest account have access to the files?

What your want to do is both. Setup a simple network between computers, then share resources between them.
