XP Hard Drive Problems

By mfg ·
I have XP Pro on my computer. I have C:, , A:, E:, & F: partions on my hard drive. A while ago when I left clicked on the C: partion it open a program written in vb and the drive icon changed. Now when I left click on any of the drive partions search and find comes up. If I right click on the partions and go to open they open fine. If any one can help me to return the hard drive to the way it should be I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

Two areas to fix this

by Deadly Ernest In reply to XP Hard Drive Problems

From your post I am not sure exactly what you want to fix but the following two areas should allow you to correct most things.

1.
My Computer >> COntrol Panel >> Administrative Tools >> Computer Management >> then select Disk Management in the left window. Then select a drive in the right window and right hand click to bring up a menu. here you can change the drive letters and paths etc.

2.
My Computer >> Tools menu >> Folder Options >> File Types tab >> then select the item that has NONE for the extension and 'Drive' for the File Type, click on the Advanced button and this opens a window where you can change the actions and the Icon, despite it being greyed out you can still hit 'Change Icon' and get a host of different icons thatyou can select.

between these you can change the drive letter, the icon, and the actions performed when you click on the icons.

have fun getting them to what you want.

I have tried both of these

by mfg In reply to Two areas to fix this

I have tried both of these and it wont change. What I am trying to fix is: when I double left click on any drive instead of the drive opening the search for files and folders appears. The drives will not open unless I right click and explore. If I do this then the drives open.
Thank you for your help so far.

Folder Options

by Deadly Ernest In reply to I have tried both of thes ...

As I pointed out in item 2

My Computer >> Tools menu >> Folder Options >> File Types tab >> then select the item that has NONE for the extension and 'Drive' for the File Type, click on the Advanced button and this opens a window where you can CHANGE THE ACTIONS

The type of actions normally found here will vary with the item being acted on, but the most common are Open, Browse, Run, Find. My copy of Win XP pro has entries for the actions of Browse and Find for (NONE) Drive, and it has Explore and Open for (NONE) Folder.

Click on the button 'New' and you get a window when you type in an Action and then select a program to perform that action.

If you select an existing action you can usually select the 'Edit' button and be able to change the program that is activated by selecting that action.

Your problem appears to be that the wrong action program is running and thus need to be changed, via this area.

How to select

by Deadly Ernest In reply to What extension am I defau ...

As previously advised open My Computer, go Tools >> Folder Options >> File Types tab

then select the line that has a picture of your hard drive followed by '(NONE) Drive', click on the 'Advanced' button.

This opens a window, click on the 'New'button to open another window. In the box marked 'Action' type OPEN, then in the box marked 'Application used ot perform action' you type C:\Windows\Explore.exe or use the 'Broesw' button to locate that file in your Windows directory. Then back outclicking the buttons 'OK' 'OK' 'Apply' 'OK'.

Then repeat this process but replace 'OPEN' with 'BROWSE'.

this will set MS Explore as the program to be used to open or browse your drives. Sometimes you need to reboot the system for the changes to take effect.

If you have trouble understanding this send me an e-mail (ebywater@bigpond.net.au) and I will send you a word document with screenshots explaining it in more detail.
