XP Home can't access cj.com or qksrv.com

By dice ·
My wife's PC, on the same home network, runs Win 98 and it works, fine.

I can get to these sites only if I enter the IP address in MSIE.

I've tried Netscape navigator and that doesn't work, either.

It's almost as if there is a setting on my PC that denies these domain names.

Assistance appreciated.

What's the error message?

What error message do you get? The page cannot be displayed? You're not running some sort of parental controls or content rating are you? I don't see why either would block those sites unless some sort of key word popped up somewhere.

Error message is "Page cannot be displayed"

At the bottom is a

"Cannot find server or DNS Error" message.

I can get to the site if I use the exact IP address. But sometimes the site doesn't use relative URLs and hard-codes "www.cj.com" and then I get another "Pcbd" error.

I don't have any parental controls running.

It's not the router, since my wife (who runs Win 9 can access it with no problem.

Check your hosts file

It's in \windows\system32\drivers\etc. See if cj.com is listed in there. If so, remove (or comment out) that line.

That worked!

I'm curious how those sites even got there.
