Im running XP PRO and I cannot install this NET FRAMEWORK UPDATE (KB979906). After Windows update fails to install it cancels out and seconds later its asking to install it again. I have no infections and I ran an xp repair. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated for I do not want to reformat this computer. Thanks in advance...

Try going to the MS Update website

Rather than using the desktop update. The website update sometimes gets around hangups with the desktop.

Another place to check is "Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs" and see if this update is listed. If it is, you can try removing it and run Update again.

Do you have .net1.1 service pack 1 installed?

by Slayer_ In reply to XP PRO NOT INSTALLING NET ...

If so, delete it, then uninstall .Net1.

If the uninstall fails, try one of these cleanup tools. These tools will still work, even if the uninstall failed because "applications need it" (stupid thing)

Once uninstalled, make a windows restore point, restart your computer and reinstall net1.1 and let windows update handle the rest.

Update log may give additional information

by TobiF In reply to XP PRO NOT INSTALLING NET ...

If you dig into Windows update log, you may find additional information about what went wrong (at what stage of install, error code etc.) This won't immediately make you happy, but can help in the further search. (So, first try the workaround suggestested above)

Have seen this a few times

I just use this utility to remove .net completely, then reinstall. Should resolve your issue.
