xp vpn authentication failing on repeated ppp lc configuration requests

I have an xp vpn client connecting to an xp vpn server both workstations running xp professional. I get up to the user authentication step and WireShark shows me repeated ppp lc configuration requests and then it dies. What could be the problem?
