XP vs HP scanner

By Chester Peterson ·
I have a HP 3500c scanner which wont work with XP pro.
When I install the software and the scanner in a friends XP pro machine it works fine.
When I install into my XP pro the software gets about ? way thru and comes up with an error message with something about virtual Java.
Does anyone know what this means?

XP has native support for HP scanners. Go to www.hp.com for more details about using scanners under XP.

If the error you are getting is that JAVA virtual machine is not installed, you need to install JAVA.
It sounds like your friends PC has virtual machine installed, and yours does not.
Microsft is trying to get rid of JAVA, so they did not include JAVA in Windows XP.

2 ways to get JAVA:
Download and install XP service pack 1 from Microsoft.

Download and install JAVA SE runtime from Sun Microsystems

Unfortunately Microsofts Knowledge Base has no info on this device. I do know that XP does have native support for scanners and cameras. Perhaps trying to run the scanner with the default XP drivers and another OCR application such as OmniPage. Be sure there is no instance of the HP software installed. If possible, run a restore to a date previous to your first installation of the HP drivers. Besides, OmniPage is a much better written program for scanners than what HP puts out. I own an All-in-One printer and the bundled OCR software is garbage but it interferes with any other OCR I use.

Anyway, good luck with this, the default Windows drivers SHOULD work, although you may not have ALL the functionality that the OEM drivers would provide.
